STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. STEM education focuses on integrating these topics to provide a deeper understanding in students. The term was originally used by the education-based programs of the National Science Foundation (NSF.) However, while the NSF, the US Department of Education and many organizations and media have called attention to the dire need for developing STEM experiences for students, there is no clear definition or expectation for elementary STEM education in the US.
