Response to Intervention
The RTI instruction is organized into three tiers. All students receive instruction in Tier 1. In this tier, students receive whole-class and small-group instruction from the classroom teacher during reading and writing using the core curriculum.
Students who are not meeting benchmark on the curriculum based measures receive Tier 2 instruction. In this second level of RTI, supplemental instruction is provided with the focus on supporting and extending the Tier 1 instruction. This may occur within the classroom during the literacy block, or the student may receive that extra support outside of classroom in a small group.
If students are not responding to Tier 2 instruction they will need a more intensive level of instruction provided in Tier 3. This tier is more individualized and provided outside of the classroom, by the literacy specialist in one-to-one setting. Students who do not show adequate progress within this RTI framework are often considered for special education.
