Barbara Greenwood - Kindergarten Teacher
My name is Barbara Greenwood and as the kindergarten teacher, I have the best job in the world! Kindergarten at Kensington Elementary School (KES) is a special time and place in your child's educational experience. KES is a place where we listen, share and learn from one another; a place where we learn the importance of respecting others and our school. Each child enters Kensington with varied learning styles, experiences and interests. As their Kindergarten teacher, I embrace these differences and encourage each child to celebrate and share their unique strengths with others within our classroom community. The entire KES staff strives to provide a safe and welcoming environment where your children feel comfortable taking risks. Many activities are open ended so that children will be creative in their problem solving techniques. Often, the children collectively negotiate the different ways in which a task can be completed. The goal of the activities is to build upon their prior knowledge and to develop even more greatly their sense of curiosity. Children learn best by doing. Learning is fun! Our classroom is often filled with laughter, discussion and voices filled with glee. I want your child to be excited to enter school each day. I want them to be enthusiatic and eager to learn. Kindergarten is one of the first formal steps in your child's process of learning and kindergarten at KES is meant to be a welcoming and memorable starting point for the lifelong celebration of learning!
I am one of seven children and I grew up in Syracuse, N.Y. As the middle child, I learned the importance of sharing and hope that I instill that into my everyday teaching. I attended Eisenhower College and received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1983. In 1985 I attended San Jose College for graduate courses. I began my career at KES as a special education teacher in 1987. In 1993, I received my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of New Hampshire. When Kensington began their first kindergarten program, I was thrilled to be offered the position of kindergarten teacher. I have been working at the Kensington Elementary School for twenty-four rewarding years!
I live in Kensington, with my three children and husband of twenty-six years. All of my children attended school at KES, which gave them a solid foundation for further studies. My oldest daughter is a junior in college, my second daughter is a freshmen in college and my youngest daughter is currently a sixth grader at the Cooperative Middle School. I am very proud of all of them! All in all, Kensington is a wonderful place to work and live.
